US Senator Kamala Harris has been named running mate of presidential nominee Joe Biden. She is the first black and indian american woman on a major party presidential ticket in us history. She was born in 1964 to the late Shyamala Gopalan, a cancer researcher from Chennai, and Donald Harris, an economics professor from Jamaica.
She earned an undergraduate degree from Harvard University, where she majored in economics and political science. After getting a law degree from University of California Hastings, she began working as a prosecutor in Oakland.
In 2004, Miss Harris became San Francisco's district attorney, the first black woman to hold the position. In the role, she she created the back on track program, in which first time drug offenders could avoid jail time by finishing high school or getting a job.
She then became the first female attorney general of California. In 2011, Kamala Harris married Douglas M. Hoff, an attorney, in 2014. As a us senator. Since 2016, she has served on powerful committees on intelligence and homeland security.
Miss Harris ran for the 2020 democratic presidential nomination and dropped out of the race in December 2019 after campaign funds dried up. One of the things she is known for is her prosecutorial style of questioning at Senate hearings.
